Five rules of midwinter
- German markets die on Christmas Eve. Dresden's Striezelmarkt runs 25 Nov – 24 Dec and closes at 2pm on the 24th. Bremen, Nuremberg, Munich: same. German markets go in the first half of the trip, or not at all.
- But some keep going. Colmar runs to 29 Dec. Prague, Vienna and Budapest run into January. Copenhagen's Tivoli glows until New Year's Eve.
- The Lapland flight has a deadline. easyJet flies Edinburgh ↔ Rovaniemi direct until 3 Jan 2027 — a Sunday, the last flight of the season, and exactly the day we'd want it.
- The Santa Claus Express is already on sale. Finnish rail opens sleeper cabins ten months out. Christmas week sells in minutes. The glass igloos too.
- Two rare things land inside our dates. 31 Dec: Silvesterchlausen in Appenzell. 5 Jan: the Glöcklerlauf in the Salzkammergut. Neither moves. Both are exactly us.
The North Road
Canal-house Christmas → North German gothic → a ship across the Baltic → a sleeper train over the Arctic Circle → New Year under the aurora → the Highlands to land softly.

Amsterdam
We land straight into the Light Festival — art strung along the canals, best seen from a small boat at dusk.
- Museum Vrolik — a 19th-century anatomical cabinet almost nobody visits.
- A whole church hidden in a canal-house attic since the Reformation.
- The Pulitzer — twenty-five 17th-century canal houses knitted into one hotel.
Hamburg, then Copenhagen
- Ohlsdorf — the largest park cemetery on earth, in winter mist. St. Nikolai, a bombed-out Gothic spire with a glass lift to the top. Miniatur Wunderland, far more magical than it sounds.
- One night at Tivoli — arguably Europe's most beautiful Christmas market, open through NYE — sleeping at the Nimb, a Moorish palace inside the gardens.
Stockholm
- The 23rd: Gamla Stan goes dark at 3pm, a candle arch in every window. Birthday dinner at Den Gyldene Freden — open since 1722, owned by the Swedish Academy.
- The 24th is Swedish Christmas. A full julbord in courses, and at 3pm the entire country watches the same 1958 Donald Duck cartoon. We are participating.
- The 25th: the UNESCO Woodland Cemetery in snow, and the Vasa — a warship raised whole after 333 years underwater.
A ship, then a sleeper train to the Arctic Circle
- Silja Symphony, dep 16:45. Through the archipelago at sunset — which in December is 3pm, so we get all of it in gold light. Suite with a sea view.
- A full day in Helsinki — the church blasted into solid granite, then a sauna and ice plunge before boarding.
- Santa Claus Express, 19:29 → 07:20. Upstairs cabins: two berths, private bathroom, and a fold-out shower. On a train.
Finnish Lapland
- Rovaniemi first — Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle line, unironically. Then four nights further north for real aurora odds and real silence: huskies, reindeer, frozen forest.
- NYE: dinner at the lodge, then out onto a frozen lake at midnight with the sky doing its own thing.
- 2 Jan — his birthday. The trip's biggest splurge: a private glass igloo under the aurora, and a hosted dinner. The whole route is engineered around this night.
Scotland — the part we haven't done
- Prestonfield House — 17th century, peacocks, Highland cattle, tartan and taxidermy. One theatrical night.
- The Fife Arms, Braemar — a coaching inn rebuilt by gallerists: a Picasso in the hall, a Freud, a stag under a ceiling painted as a Cairngorms star map.
- Rosslyn Chapel on the way south — four centuries of carvings nobody can fully explain.

The kitschiest markets in Germany, caught before they close → Christmas among Prague's alchemists → Colmar with the crowds gone → New Year's Eve with masked mummers at 5am → the Alps.

Bremen, then Dresden
- Bremen is the sleeper pick — a UNESCO marketplace, plus Schlachte-Zauber: a full medieval market on the river with fire pits, furs, mead horns and minstrels.
- Her birthday at the oldest Christmas market in Germany. The 23rd is Striezelmarkt's last full day: the world's largest Christmas arch, Erzgebirge woodcraft, Stollen everywhere. Eleven markets total — the torchlit medieval one in the Stallhof is the atmospheric one.
- Moritzburg Castle — dressed every winter as the set of Three Wishes for Cinderella. A baroque palace on a frozen lake, done up as a fairy tale.
Prague
The markets here run into January — Christmas Day is still fully lit. And this is where the route earns the word macabre.
- The Sedlec bone church — forty thousand people arranged into a chandelier, a coat of arms, garlands.
- The Old Jewish Cemetery, twelve layers deep, and the synagogue where the Golem sleeps in the attic.
- A real alchemical laboratory found behind a false wall in 2002. And Death ringing the hour on the Astronomical Clock.
Colmar, again — and emptier
- Colmar's six markets run to 29 December — we catch the last three days with a fraction of the crush we saw in 2023.
- The thing we missed last time: the Isenheim Altarpiece — Grünewald's plague-ravaged Christ, painted for a hospital. One of the most disturbing masterpieces in Western art, fifteen minutes from the glühwein.
- A driver out to Riquewihr and Eguisheim after dark, when the coaches leave.
Groups called Schuppel dress as the Ugly — clad in moss, ivy and pine — and the Beautiful, in mirrored bonnets and headdresses that take hundreds of hours to build. They walk from farmhouse to farmhouse from five in the morning until midnight, ringing enormous bells and singing a slow wordless yodel to bring the new year to each household.
It's never announced. You find them by listening for bells across the valley — which is why we have to sleep in the village.
Keep back at private houses. After a yodel, stand quietly — no applause, no flash, no phone lights.
His birthday inside the Eiger: the railway to Europe's highest station and an Ice Palace carved into the glacier. Lucerne to finish — under a 1408 bridge painted with a complete Dance of Death.
The Old
Dark Christmas
The pagan winter. The Europe where the year is turned over by men in masks with bells — from Budapest's caves, to a Romanian street full of devils, to a valley of candlelit lanterns on the last rough night.

Budapest
- The Hospital in the Rock — a WWII hospital and Cold War bunker inside the caves under Castle Hill, equipment still in place.
- The Castle Labyrinth, where Vlad Țepeș was reportedly held prisoner. And the House of Houdini — he was born here.
- The thermal baths at night, steam rising off the water into the cold. Markets running into January.
Transylvania
- Corvin Castle — the most theatrically Gothic castle in Europe: drawbridge, bear pit, and a well dug over fifteen years by prisoners promised a freedom that never came.
- Sighișoara — an inhabited 12th-century citadel and the house where Vlad III was born. Viscri and Biertan, fortified Saxon churches.
- The birthday, in a Transylvanian manor: a private dinner at Count Kálnoky's estate — wood fires, hand-painted furniture, and absolutely nobody else.
The most intact traditional rural culture in Europe: wooden churches with sixty-metre shingled spires, horse carts, carved gates. Christmas here is still communal, still slightly pagan — and villagers can usually get us invited to something.
The Winter Customs Festival, unbroken since 1969. Carved wooden masks — part demon, part animal, part indescribable — worn by young men running the streets with cowbells at their waists, with goat dances, bear dances and horsemen.
The Merry Cemetery. Eight hundred oak crosses painted cobalt blue, each with a portrait of how the person lived and a rhyming, frequently rude epitaph about how they died.
The Mocănița — original steam locomotives on a narrow-gauge forestry line, up a valley with no road, in snow.
Vienna
Vienna's macabre inventory is the best in Europe and almost nobody comes for it.
- The Narrenturm — Europe's first purpose-built asylum, a circular 1784 fortress holding fifty thousand pathological specimens.
- The Kaisergruft — 150 Habsburgs in baroque sarcophagi crawling with sculpted skulls. Hearts in a second church, entrails in a third.
- NYE on the Silvesterpfad: the whole inner city becomes a party trail, with waltzing on the Graben at midnight. Or black tie at the Hofburg.
Salzburg & the Glöcklerlauf
- His birthday dinner in a room from 803 AD — St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, plausibly the oldest restaurant in Europe, candlelit and vaulted.
- 5 Jan, Ebensee, 18:00 sharp: the last rough night. Groups in white run blacked-out streets wearing enormous illuminated caps — lanterns lit with real wax candles, a year in the making — ringing bells to wake the grain under the snow.
- And Hallstatt without the day-trippers: a charnel house of 600 hand-painted skulls, and the oldest salt mine in the world.

Route one has the best single night. Route two has the best markets. But route three is the only one that's one continuous idea — and the one nobody we know will have done.
